A QUICK REFRESHER
Roman numerals use letters to represent numbers. Add symbols when they are written from larger to smaller values. In the subtractive pairs IV and IX, subtract I from the symbol after it: IV = 4 and IX = 9.
For example, XXIV = XX + IV = 20 + 4 = 24.
| Symbol | Value |
|---|---|
| I | 1 |
| V | 5 |
| X | 10 |
| L | 50 |
| C | 100 |
| D | 500 |
| M | 1000 |
